What is ILDO

What is an ILDO SMS route?

An ILDO (International Long Distance Operator) is a telecom operator licensed by India's Department of Telecommunications to carry international traffic into and out of India. When an SMS starts on a server or network outside India, it enters India through an ILD gateway and is then delivered by Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL. That path is called the ILDO route, or the international route.

Domestic business SMS in India must follow TRAI's DLT rules: a registered business, header and template for every message. Senders based outside India often cannot complete DLT quickly, so Indian operators accept their traffic on the ILDO route instead, with an international termination charge and a numeric sender ID. Bulk SMS India offers ILDO routes for international clients, alongside our domestic DLT routes.

Avoid URL shortenersShortened and unknown links are often filtered. Use your own domain if you need a link.
Send consistent contentKeep message formats stable, like an OTP template, so they are not flagged as spam.
Plan a domestic route for scaleFor large volumes or promotional SMS, register on DLT and use the domestic route at a lower cost.

Frequently asked questions

What does ILDO mean in SMS?

ILDO stands for International Long Distance Operator, a telecom operator licensed in India to carry international traffic. An ILDO SMS route carries messages that start outside India through an international gateway to Indian mobile networks.

Do I need DLT registration to use an ILDO route?

No. Senders based outside India can reach Indian numbers over the ILDO route without registering on India's DLT platform. Businesses based in India must use DLT-registered domestic routes.

Can I use my brand name as the sender ID on an ILDO route?

Usually not. Messages on ILDO routes normally show a numeric sender ID, so include your brand name at the start of the message text.

Is ILDO SMS more expensive than domestic SMS?

Yes. Indian operators charge international termination rates for ILDO traffic, which are higher than domestic rates. For large volumes, registering on DLT and using the domestic route usually costs less.

Can I send promotional SMS over an ILDO route?

Promotional SMS is heavily restricted on international routes. ILDO routes are best for OTPs, alerts and other transactional messages.

Does Bulk SMS India offer ILDO routes?

Yes. Bulk SMS India offers ILDO routes for international businesses sending to Indian numbers, as well as domestic DLT routes with direct connectivity to Airtel, Vi, BSNL and Jio. Our team helps you choose the right route.

How do I connect to the ILDO route?

You can connect over our HTTP SMS API or SMPP, or send from the web panel. Delivery reports come back for every message.
