How Australian SMS works

How business SMS works in Australia

Australia allows brand-name (alphanumeric) sender IDs such as "ACME", which customers trust more than a random number. Since 1 July 2026, those sender IDs must be on the ACMA SMS Sender ID Register. Messages from an unregistered brand sender ID are shown as "Unverified" instead of your brand name, and are far more likely to be ignored.

You can also send from a phone number, which is not covered by the register and suits two-way messages. Either way, commercial messages must follow the Spam Act 2003: get consent, identify your business and include a working unsubscribe option. We explain the sender options and the register before your first campaign.

  • Brand sender IDRegistered on the ACMA register.
  • Or a numberFor two-way replies.
  • Spam Act readyConsent, identity and unsubscribe.
  • Delivery reportsStatus for every message.
